These are the steps to take over the next half hour.

Squeeze the clock while you dial. It will not fix the tooth. It just gives your hands something to do.

Chapter 1C.01
Out
Most urgentKnocked-out tooth · Minutes matter

The tooth has come out completely

An adult tooth that is replaced within about half an hour has a good chance of taking hold again. Once an hour has gone by, the chances drop sharply.

30 minWindow to replant

Field notes

Hold
Pinch the crown, the white chewing surface. Stay off the root.
Rinse
If it is dirty, swish it for about ten seconds in milk or plain water. Do not scrub it or use soap.
Replace
Ease it back into the socket, then bite softly on a piece of gauze.
Or carry
Place it in a cup of milk, or hold it inside your cheek. Plain water is a poor choice for storage.
Then
Phone right away. Aim to be with a dentist as soon as you can.

The reasoning

Living cells coat the root and are what let the tooth bond to the jaw again. Open air dries them out within minutes. Milk keeps them healthy, while tap water makes them swell and burst.

Baby teeth follow other rules. Never press a primary tooth back into place. Call a dentist and take the tooth along.

Chapter 2C.02
Ache
Same daySevere toothache · Pain that disturbs sleep

A deep, pounding ache that will not ease

If the pain jolts you awake or drags on beyond a full day, the nerve is probably affected. That kind of ache rarely fades without treatment.

TodaySee someone same day

Field notes

Rinse
Stir half a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and swish.
Floss
Slide floss carefully down each side of the tooth. A wedge of food can feel just like a toothache.
Cold
Hold a cold pack to the cheek for twenty minutes, then rest it for twenty.
Relief
Ibuprofen or acetaminophen, following the package directions.
Never
Tuck aspirin against the gum. It irritates and burns the tissue.

The usual cause

Often a cavity or crack has worked its way into the pulp, the soft core of the tooth. Warning signs include pain that hangs around after hot or cold drinks and throbbing that worsens when you lie flat. A dentist can relieve it the same day.

Chapter 3C.03
Chip
Same dayBroken or chipped tooth · Keep the fragment

Part of the tooth snapped away

A tiny chip can often hold until tomorrow. A break that aches, bleeds, or reveals a pink spot in the middle should not be put off.

Keep itTake the piece along

Field notes

Rinse
Swish your mouth gently with warm water.
Save
Every fragment you find, kept in milk.
Press
Hold gauze on bleeding spots for ten minutes.
Cover
Rough or sharp edges, using dental wax or sugar-free gum.
Cold
A cold pack against the lip or cheek to limit puffiness.

Gauging the damage

Check the exposed surface. White or yellowish means the break stopped in the enamel or dentin. A pink or red dot signals an exposed nerve, and that calls for a same-day visit.

Chapter 4C.04
Swell
Do not waitSwelling or abscess · Possible infection

Your gum or face is puffing up

A tooth infection will not clear up on its own. If ignored, it can spread.

Go nowSwelling with fever

Field notes

Look for
A bump on the gum, a foul taste, a puffy cheek or jaw, a fever.
Rinse
Gentle salt-water rinses through the day.
Do not
Squeeze it, cut it open, or apply heat.
Then
Phone today, even when the pain has faded.

When to head to the hospital

If a bad ache suddenly disappears, the nerve may have died while the infection carries on spreading.

Go to an emergency room or call 911 if breathing or swallowing becomes difficult, if swelling moves up to the eye or down the neck, or if you develop a high fever.

Chapter 5C.05
Loose
This weekLost filling or crown · Save the crown

A filling or crown has come loose

Seldom urgent on the first day. It turns into a problem when the tooth underneath stays uncovered.

This weekEarlier if painful

Field notes

Keep
The crown itself. Dentists can often cement it back on.
Cover
Over-the-counter temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can hold things in place for a few days.
Never
Craft or superglue of any kind.
Chew
On the opposite side of your mouth until it is repaired.

Why it should not wait

A tooth that wore a crown was trimmed down and has little enamel remaining. Left bare, it can decay or crack fast.

While you wait

Chill the cheek, not the tooth.

Sit with your head propped up and press something cool on the outside of the cheek. Skip the aspirin on the gum and chew on the other side.

After that, make the call. Within a minute or two, a dentist can usually say whether it can hold until morning.

NotesP.04

What people want to know before they call

Which problems count as a dental emergency?

A tooth that has been knocked out or knocked loose, bleeding that will not slow down, a swollen face or gum, and an ache strong enough to keep you up at night. A tiny painless chip, or a filling that fell out without hurting, can usually hold for a day or two.

Do I need the ER, or can a dentist handle it?

Choose the hospital ER if you struggle to breathe or swallow, if swelling is creeping toward your eye or neck, if you suspect a broken jaw, or if bleeding will not stop. For nearly everything else, a dentist is the better stop. An ER can calm pain and start treating infection, but it generally cannot repair the tooth.

Is it really possible to save a tooth that was knocked out?

Frequently, yes. The odds are best when the tooth goes back into its socket quickly, and a tooth kept moist in milk still has a fair chance for roughly an hour or so. The longer it sits dry, the weaker the outcome gets.

What if my problem starts late at night or on a weekend in Orlando?

Call the number on this page and describe what happened. Should no office be able to see you before morning, the steps in this guide are the same ones a dentist would walk you through in the meantime. Visitors staying in a hotel near the parks can call too; you do not need to be a local.

Which pain relievers are safe for a toothache?

Ibuprofen or acetaminophen from the drugstore, used exactly as the package says, along with a cold pack held against the cheek. Keep aspirin off the gum, since it can burn the tissue.

My child lost a baby tooth in a fall. What should I do?

Leave a baby tooth out; pushing it back can harm the adult tooth forming underneath. Hold gauze on the spot until bleeding stops, then phone so a dentist can make sure no fragment remains in the gum.
